A. Nitric oxide is formed in the body from select amino acids, oxygen and other molecules by various enzymes.

The endothelium (inner lining) of blood vessels uses nitric oxide to signal the surrounding smooth muscle to relax, thus resulting in vasodilation and increasing blood flow.

Q. What Are Nitric Oxide Supplements?

A. The term “Nitric Oxide Supplements,” though commonly used, is actually a misnomer. Currently there is no such thing as supplemental nitric oxide. There are however, supplements that increase or “boost” nitric oxide production within the body.

Some of the more common supplements include the amino acids L-Arginine, L-Citrulline and L-Norvaline. There are also many herbal extracts such as grape seed oil and pine bark that can boost NO production in the body.

A. Since nitric oxide boosters (as a category of supplements) is still relatively new, it’s hard to determine whether or not there will be long term health effects from its use.

    The amount of nitric oxide within a supplement will vary depending on the supplement’s purpose and the recommended dose listed on the label. There has not been a specific guideline as to how much nitric oxide is safe to intake in supplement form. However, too much can cause adverse side effects. It is highly recommended that you follow the instructions on the bottle when you take a nitric oxide supplement.
