The Real Dad Bod

If you have access to the internet, let alone a social media account, you’ve most likely heard about the new “dad bod” craze. For those that seem to have fortunately missed the boat, we’ll fill you in: The term was coined by a sophomore female student at Clemson University to more or less describe men who aren’t obsessed with fitness, who may have a gut, and just look average.





However, big social media platforms soon took this term and spun it to the complete extreme, sparking a strange phenomenon: the social media world started celebrating both celebrity and non-celebritys’ guts, flabby upper-bodies, and yes, non-muscular physiques.

So, What’s the Big Deal?

While fitness and health are personal choices, the “dad bod” craze has started to glorify unhealthy choices and unhealthy bodies, even to the point of shaming fit-looking individuals for their healthy choices. The term was also extended to not just dads but to anyone that fit the mold.

However, it appears to many individuals on the other side of the craze that the “dad bod” fad is nothing more than a cop out for making healthy decisions and taking care of your body. While we agree it is good to have balance in your life, we also believe that taking control of your health through exercise and nutrition are imperative to overall well-being.

Consequently, we tend to agree with Socrates, the ancient, wise philosopher on the matter of fitness when he famously said, “No citizen has a right to be an amateur in the matter of physical training.. what a disgrace it is for a man to grow old without ever seeing the beauty and strength of which his body is capable.”

Let’s Get Real

Sure, you don’t need to be at the gym 24/7, you may not even need a gym membership, but to neglect healthy lifestyle choices, including exercise and nutrition is doing yourself big disservice in reaching your full potential.

So, if “dad bod” is still going to get tossed around continually on the internet, let’s ameliorate the term a little bit and celebrate these images of dads that care about fitness:

Mark Wahlberg

You may or may not have seen Mark Wahlberg completely ripped in the box office hit Pain & Gain or kicking ass in movies like Lone Survivor and The Fighter, just to mention a few. Mark’s got 4 children and is certainly no stranger to lifting weights. He’s been sporting a shredded physique ever since his days in the hip-hop group Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch. He knows how to stay fit and healthy.



Anderson Silva

Anderson “The Spider” Silva is a Brazilian MMA and formuer UFC Middleweight champion. He has been ruling the cage for a while, taking a short period of time off to make a comeback from a devastating injury, only to bounce back even harder. With 5 kids and an incredible record under his belt, Anderson Silva has been said by many sports analysts as being one of the greatest MMA figthers of all time. Take one look at his physique and the way he moves on his feet and you’ll agree he is the epitome of athleticism.



Hugh Jackman

Hugh Jackman, aka Hugh “Jacked-Man” just recently joined the “1,000” pounds club, meaning he hit a total of 1,000 pounds lifted with just three lifts: the squat, deadlift, and the bench press. He’s got 2 kids, involved in several big screen successes, and still has time to put in work at the gym. You can catch him on Instagram, where he is really active and posts some awesome fitness clips, like this one.



Dwayne Johnson

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson needs no introduction, but we’ll give him one anyways. When he’s not killing it in the ring or filming record-breaking box office hits like the Fast & Furious Franchise, he’s getting his pump on in the gym and sporting a killer physique. A source of fitness inspiration for many, Dwayne has one kid and knows how to get results, inside and outside the weight room.



David Beckham

When ladies from all over the world aren’t swooning over him, this dad of 4 kids is busy staying fit and being a role model for the youth with awards like the “2014 Kids’ Choice Sports Award,” not to mention the massive amount of adult sports fans he garnered from his professional soccer career, playing on teams like Manchester United and Real Madrid. David Beckham is more than deserving of all the accolades he receives. The guy knows how to stay lean and look good.



Branch Warren

Branch Warren is an American IFBB professional bodybuilder, who stars in several coveted fitness magazines as well as the popular Generation Iron bodybuilding documentary. Branch Warren puts in countless hours in the gym and extreme amounts of dedication into his diet to get the body he has. Branch Warren has one daughter, several wins under his belt, like the 2011 and 2012 Arnold Classic, and will be competing in the Mr. Olympia later this year.



Terry Crews

Former football player turned hilarious and talented actor, Terry Crews is famous for being crazy shredded and bringing the laughs on the big screen. It’s no secret, you’ve probably seen him conducting a band with his physique in the funny Old Spice commercials. He’s got 5 kids, and is definitely a prime example of fitness and dedication.
