How Does It Work?

Your body uses many complex molecules for signaling and regulation. Many of these molecules can be hard for your body to make so it employs a shortcut: it makes them from relatively complex molecules like tryptophan that are already very similar in structure. In 2001 the FDA relaxed many of its restrictions as the unsafe processes used in the past had been identified, traced to its source, and stopped. Getting Tryptophan from supplements is safe as long as you follow your supplement manufacturer’s instructions and general common sense.

What Dose Should I Take?

The best advice is to follow manufacturer instructions. If your product is sold legally in the United States the dosage should be safe. The US Food and Nutrition Board recommends 5 mg/kg of body weight (roughly 5mg for every 2.2 pounds), and many manufacturers recommend a dose around 500mg of the raw supplement for adults. [6] Each company will package its supplements differently, so the number of pills or amount of powder that contains this dosage may vary. Make sure to check the packaging for more information. If the brand shows a range of doses you can take, it’s always best to take the smallest effective dose.
