Allicin Use is a Myth
Allicin dictates the discussion about most garlic supplements, and for that reason it must be the first myth we bust. Allicin does have the chemical properties to be stronger than penicillin, clear up cholesterol, and improve blood glucose levels, but it does not have the stability to be of any use.
It is impossible to contain allicin in a supplement or pill, it will dissolve in blood after a few minutes with little to no impact on your system, and there is no guarantee (or chance) that the compounds needed to create allicin will convert to allicin.
Nearly every garlic product you encounter will argue that it contains high levels of allicin, or at least allinaise, which is the compound needed to create allicin. But according to a study from a group who wrote on the “Intake of Garlic and Its Bioactive Components Recent Advances on the Nutritional Effects Associated with the Use of Garlic as a Supplement”:
“Within a few minutes after adding allicin to blood, it can no longer be detected. Allicin cannot be detected in the blood or urine after the ingestion of raw garlic or pure allicin. Although freshly crushed garlic may contain limited amounts of allicin, no commercially available processed garlic preparations contain allicin. The acidity of the stomach would be expected to prevent the conversion of allium to allicin. . . These findings clearly indicate that allicin does not contribute to the in vivo effects of garlic.”
Garlic is capable of improving many things to do with human physiology, but that is not due to the “high levels” of allicin in whatever product you use. It is typically the compounds that are created from allicin that provide the best benefits to your system.
Harunobu Amagase wrote in his book, “Clarifying the Real Bioactive Constituents of Garlic”:
“Compounds in garlic work synergistically to produce various effects, but, because of garlic’s chemical complexity, processing methods yield preparations with differing efficacy and safety. Although thiosulfinates such as allicin have been long misunderstood to be active compounds due to their characteristic odor, it is not necessary for garlic preparations to contain such odorous compounds to be effective, and they decompose and disappear during any processing.”

Garlic Purifies Blood
We can thank old wives tales for this myth, and for the semi truth here. “The cytotoxicity, cellular cholesterol synthesis, and secretion of allyl mercaptan, a major metabolite of garlic compounds, were studied in Hep-G2 cells. . . The concentration of allyl mercaptan required to suppress cholesterol synthesis by 50% was approximately 25 microg/mL. Allyl mercaptan treatment of cells incubated with 1 mM of oleic acid also resulted in a significant decrease in the cholesterol synthesis compared with the cells incubated with oleic acid alone. . . The present study demonstrates that allyl mercaptan is effective in inhibiting cholesterol synthesis at concentrations as low as 5 microg, and its inhibition is concentration dependent.”
And if that went a little over your head, basically this chemical gets in and stops the process of creating LDL which is the “bad” cholesterol your body produces when you don’t eat right. It improves the type of cholesterol in your system (it produces more HDL than LDL) and helps create a solid foundation to beat away any potential build up later on.
Does it Actually Help Diabetes?

“In this study the hypoglycaemic, hypocholesterolaemic and hypotriglyceridaemic effects of garlic were studied in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. Daily treatment of STZ-induced diabetic rats with an extract of raw garlic (500mg/kg intraperitoneally) for seven weeks significantly lowered serum glucose, cholesterol and triglyceride levels. These results indicate that raw garlic possesses a beneficial potential in reversing proteinuria in addition to reducing blood sugar, cholesterol and triglycerides in diabetic rats. While this study was done on rats, the implications are similar and mean a lot to the world of diabetes.
