Testosterone, Weight Loss, and Getting Older
December 12, 2012
It happens when you’re not expecting it. You go to the mirror one day expecting to see Thor, and instead you see a tired guy sagging in the middle.
Your body must have aged overnight!
How do you get that ripped build back? Can testosterone really help with weight loss and muscle tone?
Many variables cause you to lose weight or gain weight. Much of it involves your genetics. But your eating and exercising habits play a role as well.
Another factor we’d like to forget about is age.
As men age, several processes happen, resulting in unwanted weight gain:
- metabolism slows down
- fewer hormones (such as testosterone) are produced
- energy levels decrease
If you are getting older and starting to put on a few extra pounds, it could be due to low testosterone.
The Testosterone Link to Weight Loss
In recent studies, doctors recommended testosterone replacement therapy for older, overweight men. Most of these men were past their prime testosterone-producing age (in their 40s or 50s).
The study observed 115 obese men who received testosterone injections every 12 weeks. Surprisingly enough, the testosterone helped these men lose an unexpected average of 36 pounds!
“We came across this by accident,” explains Dr. Farid Saad, lead author of the study. “These men were being given testosterone for a hormone deficiency – they had a range of problems – erectile dysfunction, fatigue and lack of energy. . .When we analyzed the data we found that every year, for five years, they had lost weight.”
Experts are still uncertain whether the testosterone itself triggered weight loss, but Dr. Saad surmises, “It may be that the increased testosterone restored their energy levels and led to a behavioral change of being more physically active.”
However, testosterone and body weight are definitely linked. This crucial hormone is essential for building muscle and losing fat, so it’s important to keep testosterone levels up if you want to keep your youthful physique.
Testosterone Helps You Keep Your Youth
Testosterone is essential for more than weight loss. For men, testosterone is an important hormone that affects various parts of the body. As you get older and testosterone levels drop you may notice the following:
- loss of lean muscle mass
- reduced fat metabolism
- problems with sexual health
- lower physical energy and vitality
- diminished overall health
Additionally, men who suffer from low testosterone have a higher risk for several health problems.
“Low testosterone may lead to a greater risk of death,” explains Supinda Bunyavanich, MD. “Men with low testosterone had a 33 percent greater death risk over their next 18 years of life compared with men who had higher testosterone.”
If you think low testosterone is causing you to lose your youth and gain weight, then balancing your hormones may give you the lift you need.
How a Testosterone Supplement Works
Testosterone therapy and testosterone injections aren’t for everyone. The cost, the hassle of frequent doctor’s visits, and the careful monitoring of testosterone levels may seem more trouble than it’s worth.
Consequently, more and more men are turning to testosterone boosters to optimize hormone production and enhance physical performance.
“In record numbers, American guys are turning to testosterone boosters to repair their pep, revive their sex drive, even erase their erectile issues,” explains Bill Briggs, writer for MSNBC. “Annual sales of the prescription hormone have more than doubled since 2008, according to IMS Health, Inc., reaching $1.6 billion last year, en route to $5 billion by 2017, some analysts predict. And that doesn’t include testosterone supplements purchased over the counter or via the mail.”
You should note, however, legal supplements do not contain the actual hormone. They are not the hormone replacement therapy you receive from a doctor and won’t give you the same results.
Instead, testosterone supplements work with your body to stimulate testosterone production as well as influence various other factors that contribute to weight loss.
Still confused? Here’s a breakdown of how testosterone supplements can help:
- Testosterone-boosting ingredients circulate in the blood stream and send signals to the brain
- The brain releases more testosterone
- Increased testosterone in the blood circulates throughout the body
- Testosterone infuses cells with more energy, improves metabolism, and enhances muscle strength
Keep in mind, however, when you take a testosterone supplement, you’re not going to lose 36 pounds in the blink of an eye.
What you do with that extra metabolism boost and muscle building potential is up to you. If you sit around all day, you won’t enjoy the same benefits as if you exercise.
In order to see dramatic weight loss with a supplement, you also need to exercise regularly and follow a healthy diet. Keeping your body in tip-top shape creates the ideal environment for testosterone production.
While you can’t stop your body from aging, you can stop your testosterone levels from dropping too low. If you’re in general good health and you want to lose a few extra pounds of fat and gain muscle, then a testosterone supplement may be just what you need to get back into shape.
However, be sure to talk to a doctor if you are concerned about low testosterone, obesity, or other health issues.
