Raspberry ketone skyrocketed to fame when Dr. Oz dedicated a special episode of “The Dr. Oz Show” to exploring the weight loss potential of this raspberry compound.
The primary aroma compound of red raspberry, raspberry ketone is said to stimulate fat burning and even suppress the appetite. Over time, this should translate to weight loss.
Dietary supplements have since jumped on the raspberry ketone bandwagon, full of promises of smaller dress sizes and washboard abs. But hardly anyone is talking about potential side effects of raspberry ketone. Is raspberry ketone safe? Let’s find out.
How Raspberry Ketone Works
To know whether or not raspberry ketone is safe, we first have to know how it works. Biologically speaking, raspberry ketone works in two ways to promote weight loss.
First, raspberry ketone increases the release of the hormone norepinephrine. Norepinephrine is the same hormone released when you’re in stressful situations. It causes your heart rate to speed up and your body to release more glucose, combining to give you greater energy and physical performance.
The second weight loss mechanism works through a protein called adiponectin. Found in fat cells, adiponectin regulates insulin function and reduces inflammation in the circulatory system. This prevents weight gain and risk for type 2 diabetes. One study even found adiponectin increased weight loss by between 18 and 48 percent[1]. Raspberry ketone promotes this process by increasing the secretion of adiponectin.
Both mechanisms of action promote weight loss, but they also involve side effects. Here’s a look at a few of the most common raspberry ketone side effects and the reasons why they occur.
Jittery Feelings and Rapid Heartbeat
As a stimulant, raspberry ketone triggers faster reactions in the central nervous system and elsewhere in the body. As we already established, part of this process involves releasing higher levels of norepinephrine.
Norepinephrine is typically reserved for stressful scenarios in which you need a great deal of energy quickly. Imagine you’re being chased by a bear. With greater norepinephrine production, you’ll start to feel nervous and your system will be thrown into overdrive. While you have more energy and focus, you also feel sick to your stomach, your body begins to shake, and your heart pounds.
On paper, this is a great way to suppress the appetite and burn fat. However, it’s also a great way to feel jittery and nervous all day.
Increased Blood Pressure
Along these same lines, raspberry ketone can increase blood pressure. While energy levels increase as more blood pumps through your body, blood pressure will also increase. This is fine in the short term, but if you’re taking a raspberry ketone-based supplement every day over a long period of time, permanent damage can occur.
With high blood pressure, you’re more at risk for health problems like heart attack and stroke. You even raise your risk for dementia because blood flow to the brain is limited.
Thyroid Damage
Like most supplements that increase metabolism, raspberry ketone poses some threat to the thyroid. Because the thyroid gland normally controls metabolism, manipulating it—and especially putting it under duress—can cause hypothyroidism.
An underactive thyroid requires prescription medication to control and over time, can actually cause fatigue—the very opposite of what you want with raspberry ketone.
However, it’s important to point out that there haven’t been any conclusive studies on raspberry ketone’s effects on the thyroid. This side effect is merely speculation from some in the healthcare industry.
So, Is it safe?
While raspberry ketone side effects may worry you, generally they’re only seen when it is taken in large doses over a long period of time. Most of the time, you may notice some mild jitters or nausea, which often disappears after the first week of supplementation.
To use raspberry ketone safely, moderate your intake and try not to become overly reliant on your supplement. To ease any nausea-related concerns, you may want to take raspberry ketone on a full stomach with 8 to 10 glasses of water daily.
The bottom line is raspberry ketone is nearly always safe, provided you supplement responsibly.

Will it be safe
Will it affect me as I have under active thyroid
Stefan R. Wilson
September 3, 2013
Re: Will it be safe
Raspberry ketone may be safe for those with an under active thyroid. The thyroid is responsible for producing hormones T3 and T4, important chemicals that increase basal metabolic rate. The main building block for thyroid hormones T3 and T4 is tryptophan, the same amino acid needed for the neurotransmitter norepinephrine. Consequently, low thyroid function can deplete your body of norepinephrine. As the article states, raspberry ketone works in your body to increase the release of norepinephrine, a hormone that those with under active thyroid may not have enough of.
So, I would talk to your doctor first to determine if raspberry ketone a safe option for you.

im fine with it
I have been taking raspberry ketone from gnc for a month. I have seen results within the month i have went from pant size 11/12 to a 9/10 and could probably wear 7/8 but because i drive for a living i prefer my pants extra comfortable. I do not exercise i drive 12 hrs a day and i dont have time. I also have high blood pressure and have no problems with it. Yes your stool may be a little more loose at times but not bad and thats because the pill is working and getting rid of the fat instead of allowing it to absorb into the body. My doctor has given me the ok for this. I take 1 capsule 15 min before breakfast and sometimes but not always 1 before my next meal which is usually hours later and almost always the last meal. I do not eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner my last meal is usually a combo of lunch and dinner. My snack is usually a granola bar, banana, apple, or graham goldfish. Good luck everyone.

Re: keytones
If you would like to check for yourself the authenticity of raspberry ketone as a weight loss supplement, you can find an article that published the results of a clinical trial using raspberry ketones here. In this trial, subjects were fed a high-fat diet for six weeks. Those taking raspberry ketone did not gain weight, while those who took the placebo increased their weight by about 10%.
The pills generally come in a clear, melt-able capsule filled with tan-colored powder which is the raspberry ketone itself. Raspberry ketone has not been shown in clinical trials to have any side effects on menstruation and the menstrual cycle. Because raspberry ketone is not a hormone such as estrogen or progesterone, there won’t be any changes in your menstrual cycle when taking it as a supplement. I hope this helps, please feel free to comment with any questions or further concerns you have.
You can also check out the 3 best raspberry keytone supplements at a discount here.

Hi
Hi
I have taken raspberry keytone 100 mg twice a day for 3 days, I’ve got horrible headache and dizziness. That scared me, I don’t know if I should continue or not. Could you help me I don’t know what should I do?
Stefan R. Wilson
September 19, 2013
Re: Hi
Headaches and dizziness are common side-effects associated with the use of raspberry keytone. If the headaches and dizziness are severe, I would recommend to stop taking raspberry keytone and consult a doctor immediately.
However, if the headaches and dizziness are not severe, I would not panic because it is not unusual to experience those side-effects for the first few days of taking raspberry keytone. If the headaches and dizziness persist for longer than a week, there is probably something else causing them other than the raspberry keytone, possibly a change in your diet and exercise routine causing sugar levels in your body to dip. At which point, I would again recommend consulting a doctor. But after a few days of using raspberry ketone, if the headaches and dizziness begin to subside, your body has most likely adapted to it and you should be fine.

Re: hi
I would recommend staying between 100mg – 300mg a day depending on your tolerance to the effects. Start with lower doses so you can monitor how your body reacts.
As far as how long raspberry keytone should be taken if you’re taking it everyday, this is going to vary depending on the individual. But like any supplement or medication that affects your metabolism, it should be taken in cycles to give your thyroid gland breaks. For most, repeating a 6-8 week period of use followed by 2-3 weeks of non-use is enough for your thyroid gland to recover, plus it will help prevent your body from becoming tolerant to its fat burning benefits.

Re: RE:Raspberry Ketone
Raspberry Ketones are generally safe to take. However, Raspberry Ketones does contain a substance that is similar to Synephrine. Synephrine produces stimulatory effects such as an increase in metabolic rate and energy which means it may cause an increase in heart rate. Since you’ve had episodes of an irregular heartbeat, it is important that you talk to your doctor before using Raspberry Ketones.

First, discontinue your use of Raspberry Ketone. If any product is causing you to experience side effects like headaches, then it is best that you stop use. Second, Raspberry Ketone is not known to cause diabetes. However, if you have diabetes it is recommended that you talk to your doctor before you decide to take Raspberry Ketone. Lastly, if you are breastfeeding, it is highly recommended that you do not take Raspberry Ketone or any supplement for that matter unless directed by your doctor.

It sounds like you are having withdrawals. This is normal to experience when you are taking or have taken Raspberry Ketone or any supplement that has stimulating properties. Make sure you are continually eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly in order to ensure it is Raspberry Ketone, and not your lifestyle, causing these side effects.

Re: Periods
That would depend on your situation. If you have not yet started your period at all, it is highly recommend that you talk to your doctor first. Re: Periods
It could be the Raspberry Ketones that are causing you to experience a period but it could also be a problem with the ratio. Studies have found that Raspberry Ketones ease menstrual cramps and regulate heavy bleeding. Some users experience a delay in their periods or an early period. Each person is different and will react differently to Raspberry Ketones. It is highly recommended that you talk to your doctor.

Stop your use of Dyma Burn Xtreme immediately. It may be too EXTREME for your body to take especially with those side effects. Some of the ingredients within this product such as Bioperine, Fucus Vesiculosus, Zingiber Officinale, and Salix Alba can cause discomfort or cramps in your gastrointestinal system and produce laxative effects which most often result in diarrhea. Re: hey
The raspberry ketone + colon cleanse diet is a popular way to detox and lose weight at the same time. They are both safe to incorporate together. However, it’s important to purchase all-natural and credible supplements and expect even more frequent bathroom trips than with a regular cleanse. These 2 supplements work so well together because the effect of the enzymes in raspberry ketone are maximized when they are operating in a clean colon.
As far as the dosage goes, it will vary depending on the products you have chosen, but please stick to the recommended usage that can be found on the label. After several days of getting a feel for how your body reacts to this combo, you can consider lowering or increasing the dosage. If you experience any negative side effects, make sure to talk to your doctor immediately and stop use.

Re: raspberry ketone extract?
Raspberry Ketones is recognized for being a safe weight loss option. While it is rare to experience negative side effects, having headaches is one of them. Following the Raspberry Ketone diet plan a slight headache for the first week or so does happen but clears after your body is fully detoxified. Your headache may also be caused by possible dietary changes that occur with a decrease in caloric intake. If your headaches are not going away, it recommended that you stop your use and talk with your doctor.

Re: Type 1 Diabetic
According to Catherine Ulbricht, a senior pharmacist at Massachusetts General Hospital, taking raspberry ketone has the possibility of lowering your blood sugar levels and may cause heart palpitations. While raspberry ketone has been known to be relatively safe to take, those taking medication for diabetes should be monitored under the care of a doctor. If you’d like to avoid the possibility of experiencing side effects, I would advise you to talk to your doctor, eat a healthy diet and exercise regularly.

Re: Anti depression
If this difference in feelings is causing a negative impact in your daily activities, I recommend that you discontinue your use of Raspberry Ketones. According to Dr. Sarah G. I highly recommend you to talk to your doctor if you still are unsure about the interaction between antidepressants and Raspberry Ketones.

Re: anti-psychotic & anti-depressions Medications
With any green coffee product you may find yourself facing side effects such as headaches, insomnia, and anxiety as it contains caffeine. Raspberry ketone supplements also have some side effects such as heart palpitations, jitters, and nausea because it enhances norepinephrine which is part of your fight-or-flight response.
Since you are taking antidepressants and antipsychotics, I would recommend that you do not take Nutra Green Coffee Cleanse or Raspberry Ketone. Taking these products can either make your antidepressant ineffective or cause you to feel more agitated and increase the amount of antipsychotics in your blood. Both can cause an increase of experiencing negative side effects. I would highly recommend talking to your doctor before taking these products, if that is what you choose to do.

Re: rasberyy kt
Feeling jitters is known to be a side effect of taking Raspberry Ketones as it is similar to a stimulant called Synephrine which causes jitters, insomnia, and headaches. Since you are taking medication for hyperthyroidism, I would not recommend taking Raspberry Ketones. Re: Tired.
Anti-depressants have been known to cause side effects such as insomnia, fatigue, and drowsiness. Raspberry Ketones, on the other hand, are chemically similar to other stimulants which wake up your body and stimulate your system to drop extra pounds. That being said, your tiredness can very well be a side effect of your anti-depressant or inability to experience a restful sleep. I would recommend talking to your doctor about the fatigue your feeling as they may be able to adjust or change your prescription to reduce those side effects.

Some supplements are coated so that they aren’t released directly into the body and cause irritation or other side effects. Since Raspberry Ketones has stimulant-like properties, crushing the pill may disperse the chemicals faster into the body increasing the potential of experiencing increased anxiety, jitters, and rapid heartbeat. I would recommend talking to your doctor first before crushing pills.

Tablets or capsules are made into the form they are to reduce the risk of getting an overdose that can lead to a higher chance of experiencing side effects. By crushing or opening capsules, it releases the Raspberry Ketone formula immediately into your system which can greatly affect the results that usually occur with it. It is recommended that you talk to your doctor before doing such as certain supplements are made to be released over a period of time not in 5-10 minutes.

Expired supplements, whether they be Raspberry Ketones or not, start losing potency after the date that is labeled on a product. This means that it may not work as well as it would have before the expiration date. I would advise you to talk to your doctor and err on the side of caution if you choose to take supplements after their expiration date.

If it’s not a side effect of the use of Raspberry Ketones, then your doctor will be able to let you know if it’s a health problem or just the simple loss of hair.

Advice
Hi, I have just bought the forza raspberry k2 capsules. They are rather large and in a pink metallic casing. Do I swallow the whole casing or do I open it and just take the powder from inside? Thankyou
Stefan R. Wilson
March 31, 2015
Re: Advice
Supplements are supposed to be taken in the form in which they come. Sometimes they can be pretty large like your Forza Raspberry K2 capsules. There are capsules that are marked as controlled release, long-lasting, sustained release, time release, time delay, sustained action, and extended release. When marked as such, the formula within is designed to be absorbed by the body at a slower rate. Removing the capsule and just taking the powder will cause the supplement to become quickly absorbed by your body. This can lead to an overdose and an increased risk of negative side effects. If you are still unsure about how to take your Raspberry Ketones supplement, it is highly recommended that you talk to your doctor.

However, within Raspberry Ketones is a chemical that contains stimulant-like properties that causes an increase of anxiety and agitation in those who take anti-depressants like Citalopram so it is highly advised not to take them. The same side effects can occur with other ingredients that contain stimulants like Green Coffee. As for the other medications you are taking, it is highly recommended that you speak with your doctor about possible negative interactions first.

A delayed menstrual cycle is common when you start dieting and lose weight. These are just a few of the things that cause the body to become stressed. When this happens the body restricts the functions that are not essential such as the menstrual cycle in order to survive. During this time the walls of the uterus continue to fill until it can not be held any longer. Then, you may experience a delayed menstrual cycle with heavy bleeding. If you have any more concerns, I recommend talking to your doctor as they will be able to help you determine what the best course of action is for you to take.

Re: Re: Raspberry Advance Ketone
As you are still taking medication for breast cancer, I would not recommend taking Raspberry Ketones. It is highly recommended that you talk to your doctor before taking any type of dieting supplement, including Raspberry Ketones, as they will have a better knowledge as to your health and what can be done to help you with lose weight safely.

Re: How long until the affect wear off? bad symptoms having taken the ketones for a short period of time
It is highly recommended that you talk to your doctor as you’re experiencing significant negative side effects. There hasn’t been any research done on how long it takes for Raspberry Ketones to get out of your system. According to consumers of general diet pills, it takes as little as 2 days or up to 6 days, sometimes more, for the diet pill to leave their system.

No expiration date on my raspberry ketone
Hi I bought two bottles of the nutra planet raspberry ketones and there’s no expiration date on it. There is however a manufactured date 7/11/12and a lot#DL-88. Can you please tell me if the product u have at hand is still good for consumption. Thank you
Stefan R. Wilson
June 30, 2015
Re: No expiration date on my raspberry ketone
Any supplement becomes less and less potent as days continue on after the manufactured date. Being that the date shows 7/11/12, it may not be a good product to consume. It is highly recommended that you check with the company regarding their return and refund policy, especially if you got bad Raspberry Ketones supplements.

Re: side effect of ketone
Since Raspberry Ketones contains a chemical that produces stimulant-like effects, it is possible to experience stomach cramps or pains. That is one of the side effect you may experience by taking Raspberry Ketones. Other side effects include headaches, insomnia, rapid heart beat, and dizziness. I highly recommend talking to your doctor and discontinuing your use of Raspberry Ketones, especially if the pain persists.

Re: 18
Raspberry Ketones, like all other diet pills, are intended to be taken by adults who are 18 years and older. Re: Other supplements
Taking vitamins with Raspberry Ketones may be safe but supplements that contain caffeine or stimulants, such as Berocca, should not be taken with Raspberry Ketones. In regard to the negative side effects you have described, it is highly recommended that you discontinue your use of your supplements and talk with your doctor. If you can pinpoint which supplement is causing you to experience these side effects, discontinue your use. If you still have other questions about using Raspberry Ketones, it is recommended that you speak with your doctor.

Re: michellehunt40@hotmail.co.uk
Raspberry Ketones may be able to lower blood glucose levels, reduce bleeding, and cause the body to experience changes in weight and fat. However, due to the limited research for interactions of medications with Raspberry Ketones supplements, it is highly recommended that you talk to your doctor before use as it may negatively interact with your medications.

Raspberry ketones
I’ve been taking one tablet a day for roughly a week.
I have since started my menstration cycle a whole 7 days early (i’ve had a week break between the last one stopping and this one starting) it’s also been a lot more painful, like when I was a child.
Could this be to the ketones?

Re: Raspberry ketones
The painful and early menstrual cycle that you’re experiencing may be due to the use of Raspberry Ketones. However, any type of stress you place on your body, such as dieting, can cause a change in your menstrual cycle. It is highly recommended that you talk to your doctor about these changes and your use of Raspberry Ketones.

Re: dizziness
Headaches and dizziness are common symptoms of diet pills that contain caffeine or have stimulant-like properties. Raspberry Ketones does contain a chemical that acts as a stimulant that is used to activate the fat shredding process. It is highly recommended that you discontinue your use and talk to your doctor about the side effects you’re feeling as they may know a way to counteract those negative side effects.

Re: Raspberry Ketones, Caffeine and Antidepressents
Raspberry Ketones have stimulant-like properties so those who are sensitive to caffeine or stimulants may experience headaches, nausea, insomnia, and/or stomach cramps. Unfortunately, there have not been well-studied trials of the interaction between sertraline and raspberry ketones in humans. It is highly recommended that you speak with your physician about possible interactions before use.

Bloated stomach and feelings of nausea
I’ve been taking Raspberry Ketones for 6 days and felt fine until yesterday when I felt bloated and sick. I was not sure if it was the aloe vera colon cleanse or the ketone, looking at the comments here I am guessing its the keytones making me feel like this.

It is highly recommended that you discontinue your use and talk to your doctor about your use of Raspberry Ketones as well as its possible interactions with an aloe vera colon cleanse. Both Raspberry Ketones and a colon cleanse can cause an effect on the digestive system. Talk to your doctor about other possible solutions to achieve your weight loss goals.

Scary reaction
I took the Raspberry Ketone with Green Tea supplement 600mg for 4 days and woke one night to severe abdominal pain and racing heartbeat. It lasted for 7 hours and it scared me so much I almost went to the ER. Besides a multivitamin this was the only other supplement or medicine I was taking. I’m about 20 pounds over my ideal weight but I think I’ll stop taking these as I don’t know the long term effects.

Raspberry Ketone & epilepsy
Hi
I have epilepsy and am overweight with a BMI of 29. At 5’5 that is 12 stone plus so I thought of giving it a try. It said on the label 2 tabs 3 times a day. I asked the store assistant at Holland &Barrett who told me half the dose is ok. Despite going to the gym, it is not easy to burn stubborn belly fat how annoying!
Having taken it for almost a month I noticed a very small reduction in weight of a few hundred grams. I have noticed I have suffered double the number of seizures having 6 instead of 3/4 a month.
I sense it is impacting on seizure control and I won’t take again when i finish the dose.
However, it may work for some but not others so best to ask your Doctor first. I know from experience that they don’t like to go against the status quo. Which to an extent they may be justified but as medical scientists they should keep all avenues open.
Conventional medicines don’t always work that is the reason people are turning to alternative therapy.
