To fill their show every day and to get people watching, television doctors have a habit of proclaiming diet pills and their ingredients miraculous.
While these endorsements aren’t always unjustified, it’s still difficult to sift through them and figure out which ingredients and diet pills produce real results.
All this diet pill babble easily becomes overwhelming for people looking to boost weight loss with an effective diet pill. To cut through all the hype and overinflated claims, use these tips for identifying diet pills that work.
What to Look for in a Diet Pill
Whether you’re diet pill shopping online or in person, gather as much information as you can before purchasing any diet pill. Even when a TV doctor, local health store clerk, or next-door neighbor endorses a diet pill, it might not be the right one for you.
To avoid purchasing ineffective products, do your research. Check any potential diet pill purchase for the following traits.
Clearly marked dosages. When you look at the nutrition facts, each ingredient should have a listed dosage per serving. This information allows you to judge if the diet pill contains enough of each ingredient for you to lose weight.
Some diet pills use proprietary blends instead of listing each ingredient and its dosage individually. While proprietary blends sometimes work, it’s hard to be confident about a diet pill when you don’t know how much of each active ingredient it contains.
A money-back guarantee. The best diet pills are made by reputable companies who place efficacy above profit. After all, if a diet pill doesn’t work, you have a right to a refund. Avoid buying a diet pill you can’t return. A diet pill’s money-back guarantee at least protects against financial loss in the event you don’t lose weight.
There is one caveat to this rule, however. Some money-back guarantees on diet pills don’t give enough time to test a diet pill before the guarantee runs out. Generally, you’ll need at least 30 days to assess if a diet pill works for you. If a company offers an even longer money-back guarantee, you’ll have plenty of time to use their product before the guarantee expires.
Numerous consumer reviews. As you investigate a diet pill, especially online, often you’ll find comments from people who’ve already used the diet pill. Not every diet pill has them, usually because it’s newer or wasn’t heavily advertised. But, those that do have consumer feedback give you an additional level of information for assessing a diet pill.
Plus, typical consumer comments discuss more than just weight lost on a given diet pill. Many consumers mention side effects they had while taking the pill or customer service experiences. Any red flags mentioned in multiple comments indicate this is a diet pill to avoid. Conversely, if a diet pill receives repeated high praise from consumers, it may be worth trying.
Clinically Tested Ingredients
So far, these are common sense considerations when buying diet pills. But, whether a promising diet pill works depends mostly on its ingredients.
Unfortunately, determining if a diet pill’s ingredients produce weight loss requires more than common sense. It requires clinical test results that back claimed effects.
But, don’t get overwhelmed. Here’s a list of the best diet pill ingredients commonly used today. If you see one or more of these ingredients on the product label, chances are likely it benefits weight loss efforts.
Green Tea Extract. Green tea‘s health benefits often get praised in health news articles, and one such benefit is weight loss. This news isn’t just hype, though. In a 2009 study, a standardized green tea extract induced 30-pound weight loss after 90 days of treatment. The daily dose was 300 mg green tea extract. A follow-up analysis in 2011 concluded green tea extract burns fat best when taken with caffeine.
Coleus Forskohlii. This ingredient goes by several names, including forskolin, the brand-name Forslean, or plectranthus barbatus. The most promising coleus forskohlii study showed it decreased body fat and increased lean muscle mass in men who took 500 mg 10% forskolin extract daily for 12 weeks. In another study, scientists concluded the same dosage promoted weight management in women.
Green Coffee Bean Extract. Fresh, unroasted coffee beans aren’t tasty as a morning pick-me-up drink. But, they do contain high concentrations of chlorogenic acid which promote weight loss. In a 22-week crossover study, participants dropped 10% of their body weight on average by the end of the study. This trial used several different dosages, ranging from 700 to 1050 mg per day.
If you buy a diet pill with green coffee bean extract, make sure it has at least 45% chlorogenic acids. Not only is that the amount used in the study, but it’s also the doctor-recommended minimum.
Irvingia Gabonensis. Of all the fruit-derived natural weight loss ingredients available, irvingia gabonensis (African Mango) has the best scientific evidence of efficacy. Participants in a 2009 study took 150 mg irvingia gabonensis extract before lunch and dinner every day for 10 weeks. This dosage caused a 6.3% body fat loss accompanied by significant weight loss and a smaller waistline.
Conjugated Linoleic Acid. This essential fatty acid, sometimes abbreviated as CLA, has undergone several rounds of long-term testing to assess its weight loss effects and safety. Both a 6-month and a 1-year study reduced body fat with no major adverse effects reported.
But, you don’t have to take CLA that long to see results. Participants who took 1.7 grams conjugated linoleic acid for 12 weeks lost weight and had improved BMI.
This list of clinically tested ingredients isn’t exhaustive. If you’re curious about an ingredient, search for clinical trials of it yourself or find articles summarizing its benefits and side effects.
Last Steps Before Buying
Let’s say you’ve read the label and the consumer reviews for a diet pill and you’re ready to make a purchase. Not so fast. There are two final steps you need to take, but they’re the most tedious part of the process.
First, make sure the diet pill you’re considering isn’t offered on a trial basis. Often companies lure in customers by just charging for shipping costs on the first order. But, companies often turn around and enroll consumers in an auto-ship program once they have credit card and shipping information. These programs can be costly and hard to cancel. Generally, it’s better to avoid them altogether.
Second, always read the fine print. You don’t have to read every word, but you should look for details about the money-back guarantee or any additional charges that may be concealed in unglamorous “terms and conditions.” If nothing stands out, chances are the diet pill you’re about to buy is a safe bet.
The bottom line is there are diet pills that work, but you won’t know which ones they are just by taking someone else’s word for it. To identify the right diet pill for you, you can’t skip doing the research.
