Athlete Profile: Raymond Querido
WHO IS RAYMOND QUERIDO?
Hey guys, my name is Raymond Querido AKA “TheOnlineCoach” on social media. I’m from Southern California – Temecula to be exact.
WHEN DID YOUR FITNESS JOURNEY BEGIN?
My fitness journey started real early, probably high school. I played basketball as a kid throughout elementary school, middle school, and I was always a shorter guy. I wanted an edge. I wanted to be faster. I wanted to jump higher, so I started lifting weights in my garage –dumbbells.
I ended up getting a gym membership at 24-Hour Fitness, my mom hooked me up, and from there I was just hooked. I liked the fact that I was in charge of my progress, what I can do with my body. After high school, I stopped playing basketball and just continued to take on the bodybuilding and strength training.
WHAT IS YOUR STYLE OF TRAINING?
My style of training has changed over the years. It started off with the whole bodybuilding bro-split thing. You know, your chest/tris (triceps), back/bis (biceps), arm days, training each muscle group one time per week. The frequency wasn’t there.
As I progressed, as I learned more, and I realized that as a natural bodybuilder, I needed to train a little smarter, I needed to train differently. So, I slowly increased the frequency. Now I’m training every muscle group twice per week, and I’m more strength oriented. So, as a natural athlete, strength is a big factor in progressing.
WHEN DID YOU START COACHING?
I started coaching, doing the whole online coaching thing probably back in 2011. It started as a little side gig. I was selling insurance, I was a Farmers Insurance agent at the time at a desk all day, and I was always on Facebook. You know, just scoping out Facebook –bored.
At the time I was competing in the NPC, I would get people messaging me asking me if I did meal plans. So, I did them. At first I did them for free, and then it just started. I started getting a lot of referrals, and I started charging a little bit of change, and then it just went from there.
WHEN YOU’RE NOT TRAINING AND COACHING, WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO?
I’m a pretty simple guy. I have 3 kids right now –three girls, a wife. So, family life. I try to balance training, work, and the family. And I’m as simple as just sitting back at home watching a TV show, a movie at home, or going out to dinner. I don’t have much time, so just simple stuff.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT HAVING A SUCCESSFUL YOUTUBE CHANNEL?
The biggest thing that I love about having a YouTube channel is having the reach to people. You know, I’m able to motivate, inspire, educate –that’s my mantra right there –and just have people not make the same mistakes I did when I was growing up.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR GYM?
I recently opened up my own gym. I call it The Campus, and I’ve always – it’s always been a dream of mine to open up my own gym just to call my own. You know, have it geared towards what I look for, how I train, and the atmosphere that I believe in.
What really pushed me to go for it was just the whole commercial gym feel. I was going to a Golds Gym in my town and, just too many gym rules: no gym bags on the floor, no dropping the weights on the deadlift platform, just stuff like that pushed me. So I made the jump, and I can never go back in a commercial gym now. I love it.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO NEW LIFTERS?
My best advice to a new lifter that’s hitting plateaus or not getting results, not getting the results they’re looking for is: read, research, learn. Learning is the best tool that you can have while on this fitness journey because you want everything efficient, you want the best tools to keep moving on.
