2019's 10 Best
Acerola Cherry Powders

Acerola cherries are one of the single richest natural food sources of vitamin C in the world. A single serving has more than enough vitamin C for your recommended daily intake. To put that into context, 100 grams of unripe acerola cherries have anywhere from 1500 to 4000 mg of vitamin C. Compare that to oranges, which have a measly 50 mg of vitamin C per 100 grams.

The acerola cherry is also a good source of dietary fiber, vitamins, calcium, iron, zinc, potassium and copper. It contains magnesium and sodium and is 50% more bioavailable than other Vitamin C supplements. This means that your body can use the vitamin C from acerola cherries or acerola cherry powder more effectively.

Indigenous cultures from Mexico, South America and Central America still swear by the acerola cherry for medicinal purposes. It has been used in foods and as a medicine for centuries. It has several other names, such as the Barbados cherry, the West-Indian cherry, and wild crepe myrtle.

Where does the acerola cherry come from?

This fruit originally comes from the Yucatán Peninsula in South-eastern Mexico. It grows mostly in subtropical parts of the world. These days, you can find it in abundance throughout South America. This evergreen shrub typically grows best in warmer climates, as it cannot withstand temperatures below 30 degrees Fahrenheit. It favors dry and sandy soil and requires a lot of sun. The plants have a shallow root system and cannot endure a lot of wind because of that.

More recently, as the demand for this Vitamin C has grown, this shrub, which stands about 3 to 6 meters tall, has found a home in Florida, California and various parts of Texas. It is being cultivated for its nutritional benefits. Several other countries now also use acerola cherries for health reasons, and it is distributed all over the world. They grow acerola cherries in parts of Australia as well as the Indian subcontinent.

Characteristics of the acerola cherry

A ripe acerola cherry is bright red and has three lobes on the bottom. Each cherry has three triangular seeds. They weigh about 3-5 grams each. It has a sour taste, but the riper the cherries are, the sweeter they become. Unripe or barely ripe acerola cherries contain approximately one and a half times the amount of vitamin C as ripe cherries. This is according to a study in the Food Science and Technology International Journal.

The acerola cherry is a low-calorie fat-free supplement. One cup of acerola juice contains about 1 gram of fiber and 11 grams of sugar. Most of the carbohydrates come from natural sugars.

Culinary applications

Acerola cherries have a distinct flavor and can be eaten like regular cherries. There are several traditional and modern culinary applications. Acerola cherries can be added to baked goods such as pies, candies, ice cream, jellies, and jams. Frozen juice concentrates have also become more available in recent years.

The acerola cherry is also sometimes used in the production of certain alcohols. Craft beer brewers started using the acerola cherry in their brewing process, which results in a slightly tart beer full of nutrients. There are now several manufacturers that use the acerola cherry to expand their brand.

Why are acerola cherry supplements in powder form?

Acerola cherries are mostly sold in powder form because they are extremely perishable. They can lose a not-insignificant amount of their nutrients in as little as four hours after harvest. After five days, the fruit will start fermenting. The skin bruises easily, and they must be picked very carefully. Freezing these cherries also won’t work, as the freeze-thaw cycle causes them to literally fall apart.

To combat these effects, the juice of the acerola cherries is quickly dehydrated to produce the powder. In powder form, there is no loss of nutrients, and it can be added to smoothies and several other beverages. It has a deliciously tart taste and goes well with a variety of foods. Sprinkle it over yogurt, oatmeal, cereal, or pudding. That way, you get the extra nutrients and add a nice taste to your beverage or meal as well.

Benefits of Acerola Cherry Powder

All the health benefits of acerola cherries can be attributed to its high vitamin C and quercetin content. These are both powerful antioxidants. Antioxidants remove toxins from your body that can cause harm to your cells. These toxins are also called free radicals. The antioxidant effect of acerola cherries counteracts the effect of free radicals.

Free radicals are molecules that damage the cells in your body during cellular metabolism. They change the normal lifecycle of the cells. We mostly associate the increase of free radicals in the body with early aging. Vitamin C can protect damage to your cells.

Free radicals can cause healthy cells to become cancerous. According to an article in Pharmacognosy Review, it is possible that free radical activity can result in tumor formation. Because the acerola cherry is extremely high in antioxidants, it helps fight free radicals in your body, which may slow the growth of tumors.

The acerola cherry can also assist in cancer treatments, according to an article in the Phytotherapy Research Journal. Tumors often become resistant to drugs being used during cancer treatment. This is called multiple drug resistance, or MDR. It was found that acerola actually reverses this effect on the cells. So, while it doesn’t affect the disease directly, it helps to allow otherwise ineffective medicines to do their job effectively.

A severe case of vitamin C deficiency, usually in countries where people suffer from malnourishment, causes scurvy. Due to easy access to fresh fruit and other foods containing vitamin C, scurvy has not been a big problem in developed countries. In the past, it was something often experienced at sea. These days, most cases occur in underdeveloped and/or developing countries, where it can be life threatening. Because of its high vitamin C content, acerola can give you enough vitamin C and nutrients to prevent scurvy.

The acerola cherry boosts your immune system. With its high content of quercetin, early research shows that the acerola cherry can help prevent exercise-induced respiratory infections. This is due to its anti-inflammatory properties and is especially true after heavy exercise. It also helps with muscle and joint pain. It helps form a strong immune system so that you are less susceptible to infections, colds, and flu.

People with diabetes pay close attention when the insulin or glucose in their bodies spike or drop. Research shows that the antioxidant factor in acerola cherries helps slow down the release of sugar into the bloodstream. This means fewer spikes and drops in your blood sugar levels. It is also effective for preventing diabetes in healthy individuals. It does this by regulating the sugar levels in your blood.

With its high potassium content, the acerola cherry can help reduce blood pressure. It helps relieve strain on your heart by opening the blood vessels and increasing blood flow. This lowers the risk of heart attacks and strokes. The antioxidants also help get rid of toxins and cholesterol in the cardiovascular system.

Although the acerola cherry does not contain that much fiber, it still helps with digestion. It relieves constipation, diarrhea, bloating, cramping and more serious diseases such as stomach ulcers.

Want to look young forever? The vitamin C in the acerola cherry boosts collagen production and reduces cell degeneration. This means that your skin will have fewer wrinkles and will retain its elasticity and firmness. A recent study done on mice showed that not only does it prevent cell degeneration, it can also reverse it.

Side Effects

The acerola cherry is not considered an allergen but can cause some adverse effects in high doses. Some symptoms may include drowsiness or insomnia or an upset stomach. In severe cases, diarrhea may occur. Some people have also complained about stomach cramps when they’ve had a high dose of acerola cherries or acerola cherry powder. Due to its high vitamin C content and acidity, it can worsen the symptoms of gout. If you take an excess dose of acerola cherries or powder, the risk of kidney stones actually increases because of the vitamin C.

Stay on the safe side during pregnancy and breastfeeding, as the effects of acerola cherry powder in pregnant women have not yet been studied.

Also, if you are susceptible to migraine headaches, be careful not to take too much acerola. There are sometimes other side effects as well for people prone to migraines, like dizziness, fainting, and fatigue.

Interactions with other drugs

Acerola cherries have a moderate interaction with some prescription drugs. It has a minor interaction with estrogen and birth control medicine, increasing the amount of estrogen your body absorbs.

High doses of vitamin C can affect how well the drug Prolixin works. In the same vein, Warfarin also interacts with the acerola cherry. Warfarin is used to slow down blood clotting, and a high dose of vitamin C could put you at risk. It will affect the active ingredients in the drug and put you back at a higher risk for blood clots. If you are using acerola cherry supplements, ask you doctor whether you should adjust your dosage of Warfarin and/or Prolixin.

Dosages

Appropriate doses of acerola cherries are hard to determine and have not been studied extensively. It depends on your health and age. Be sure to follow the dosage instructions on your supplement. Your supplement of choice might have a higher content of vitamin C than other supplements.

What to look for in a supplement

Choose a supplement that is natural and organic. Many acerola cherry powders contain synthetic nutrients. These will not be as bioavailable as the natural supplement, and your body will not absorb it as effectively. Make sure the dosage instructions are clear to avoid taking too much acerola cherry powder.

In conclusion, acerola cherries have several proven benefits. It is still being studied for additional benefits, and soon we’ll know more about this superfood. Consult our guide on the 10 Best Acerola Cherry Powders to choose the supplement that is right for you.
